What Are You Grateful For?

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Now more than ever, when everything seems uncertain, it’s important to appreciate the people and things that bring us peace and joy.

Here’s an excerpt from my friend Helena Nyman’s Motivational Newsletter, in which she encourages us to appreciate the positive rather than dwell on the negative:

“Pay attention to what’s good about your life. Rather than worrying about what you don’t have, Seek to make the best of all the good things you do have. There are a lot of things right with your life. Give your attention to them and they will grow!”
~ Ralph S. Marston, Jr.~

It helps us to remember that we have so many blessings and things right with our lives – and by focusing on those things, paying attention to them, helps keep our few minor and some huge disappointments or struggles in proper proportion. It helps us keep perspective. When we focus on “the good,” when we actively maintain our gratitude journals, when we greet the day with expectation, we attract and nourish the good in our lives. Likewise, when we focus on the bad, when we maintain lists filled with stressors and greet each day with trepidation, we nourish the negative in our lives.

You are the gardener of your life. What crop will you choose to nourish?

Let’s Talk About Love…

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

Happy Valentine’s Day! As you celebrate this special day with those you hold dear, what are you most thankful for?

I’m thankful today for the love I consistently receive from my most supportive family and friends, and for God’s everlasting adoration. I’m thankful that I have the opportunity on this day to extend a measure of appreciation and kindness to loved ones and strangers alike. Love makes us all sisters and brothers. Remember that today, wherever your path leads you, and don’t forget to shower yourself with affection!

I also wanted to share the results of a recent survey that shows despite our nation’s current economic woes (or maybe because of them?) love outranks careers in importance.

For Valentine’s Day, the hourly job Web site SnagAJob.com commissioned a telephone survey asking 1,000 men and women the importance of love and career as contributors toward a happy life. The result – 75% said a successful relationship with a significant other is more important than a successful career in order to achieve a happy life.

Two-thirds of Americans say that they have either sacrificed their own career for the benefit of a significant other’s or would be willing to do so. Among married people, three quarters say that they have or would be willing to put a significant other’s career first.

“Granted, the workday is more fulfilling if you are able to enjoy what you do,” said Shawn Boyer, CEO of SnagAJob.com. “But, as the survey points out, relationships with significant others, friends and family are more likely the things we will look back on as vital for a happy life. It’s not often easy to balance both a successful career and personal life, but the lucky ones are people who manage to find happiness in both areas. It’s a goal worth striving for all the time.”

Let’s hear from you – What would you do? Or, if you’ve already been in this position, was the choice you made worth it?

Morning Inspiration

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

I had the opportunity this morning to serve as the guest for a women’s ministry telephone devotion called Morning Nspiration. It is sponsored by the Kingdom Worship Center in the Washington D.C. area.

Every weekday morning, from 7 to 7:15 a.m. (EST) women from around the nation call in to hear a word of encouragement and blessing to start them on their day. The call is free and open to anyone who wants to listen live at 7 a.m. You also can call anytime throughout the day to listen to the recording of the day’s message.

My message today was taken from Genesis 19, which details Lot’s flight from the wicked city of Sodom and how his wife lost her chance to live by looking back. I encouraged listeners to consider God’s new mercies every day and to stop reflecting on yesterday’s pain, troubles and heartache. If we’ll keep looking forward, we’ll be positioned to receive all that God wants to plant in us and do through us, to bless others.

If you call in today, you’ll hear the recording of my devotion.

If you’re reading this after Feb. 4, still take time to call and listen to the recorded message. Every morning’s devotion is designed to lift your spirit and give you the energy to soar.
