The Courage to Stand Alone

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

I’m looking forward to a book discussion on “Dreams That Won’t Let Go” tonight at the Trinity Baptist Church Family Life Center in Richmond. The event is open to the public! 7 p.m. at 3600 Dill Road.

In the meantime, here’s today’s Food for Thought:

Feeling for Characters

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Preparing to teach a class today at the Black Writers Reunion and Conference (www.blackwriters.org) on how to develop emotion in fiction.

Think about the characters with which you’ve laughed, cried, shared anger, fear or frustration. Doesn’t it make reading the book much easier when you feel like you’re on the journey with them?

Can you think of one or more characters that “stuck” with you long after you finished the book?

Thanks to the Readers…

I returned home earlier today from my first-ever Faith and Fiction Retreat, hosted by author Tiffany L. Warren. Had an awesome time and sincerely enjoyed meeting so many readers, book club members and aspiring authors.

I was humbled and surprised to receive the Most Life-Changing Books award at the conference, which was based on reader votes. Thanks so much for the honor, and for reading!

Weekend Plans

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Can’t believe it’s Friday, but another weekend is here!

I’ll be preparing for my nonfiction book release celebration in two weeks (April 30 at a Richmond, Va. Barnes & Noble), catching up on some spring cleaning and decluttering, and enjoying some downtime.

For you, I wish a weekend balanced with productivity, relaxation, laughter, and worship of the Creator, so that your mind, body, soul and spirit are nourished.
